Artist Wendy R. Swartz Commissioned to Paint 2012 Portland Mile Winner

Portland Meadows and local artist Wendy R. Swartz have teamed up to provide the winner of the Portland Mile a special memento of the victory.

New in 2012, Portland Meadows has commissioned Ms. Swartz to create one of her unique and beautiful horse paintings on wood. The Portland Mile will be run on Labor Day, Monday September 3, 2012 and Ms. Swartz will be onsite to meet the winning connections. This will begin the process that will culminate with a personal memento for the owners of Portland Meadows’ signature race that will last a lifetime.

On Monday September 3, 2012 Portland Meadows will host its signature event: The $35,000 Portland Mile, along with other great stakes racing action.

Our Guest today is 44 year old rider Tim Neal who is enjoying a fine comeback year here at Portland Meadows. Tim was a regular rider here for years, and came back to Portland Meadows full time this Summer Meet. He’s got 13 wins from 69 starts and is riding eight of the nine races on Sunday 8/26/12.

D Devil and Zilver get to the Winner’s Circle in Leg 1 of the McFadden Memorial Sprint Claiming Series

The 2nd running of the McFadden Memorial Sprint Claiming Series got underway at Portland Meadows on Wednesday Night. Two divisions competed, all at five furlongs and all for a $2,500 claiming price. The action on the track was fast and furious as was the action at the claim box. Horses have to run in both this first leg and then in the second leg on September 5th to be eligible for the $20,000 Series Final on September 26th. The horses accrue points in the first two legs, with the top 12 point earners getting a spot in the gate for the finals.

Sanguinetti and Fisher take home Stanford's Weekly Awards

Jockey Anne Sanguinetti made it three weeks in a row that she has been crowned the Stanford’s Restaurant Jockey of the Week as she continued her fine riding last week. Tallying 9 wins from just 19 starts, good for a 47% winning percentage. Sanguinetti is now a clear second in the Portland Meadows Jockey Standings and has drawn to within 7 winners of leading jockey Luis Torres.
