This Saturday, September 24th, join us at Alexander OTB in Fairview for the biggest handicapping tournament of the year!  The $2,000 King/Queen of Alexander Handicapping Contest will be conducted from 5:00 to 8:30pm on Saturday Night and will feature an eight race series of races from Flagler and Jacksonville Greyhound Parks.

The sun was warm outside and the Greyhound action was hot and heavy inside, as 32 local dog racing handicappers set out on Saturday night to qualify for the $2,000 King/Queen of Alexander Greyhound Handicapping Championship coming up on September 24th.  Gerry Smith jumped right out to the front after two races as he picked the runner up in leg 1 from Flagler and then nailed the 5 to 1 winner in Leg 2 at Jacksonville.

Trainer Charlynn Taketa remembered by her fellow Horsemen

Charlynn Taketa came back to training racehorses at Portland Meadows this past fall, and what turned out to be her final year at the track, certainly proved to be a memorable one.  Since her passing after a freak accident outside her Portland Meadows barn on Thursday August 11th, Taketa has been remembered by many of her fellow horseman, friends, members of the local community and her husband Jerry Taketa.

Here is some video I shot this morning of my buddy Taylor Jones, last years' People's Horse in his first day back at the track since sustaining his minor injury last winter.  He looks good (a little portly) but he is still so friendly and sweet.

UPDATE--Mark Anderson wins Manitoba Lotteries Derby---Local Jockeys ride in the $75,000 Manitoba Lotteries Derby on Monday August 1st at Assiniboia Downs

UPDATE 8/1/11--Jockey Mark Anderson and Hammers Bullet sat just off the pace to win the $75,000 Manitoba Lotteries Derby on Monday at Assiniboia Downs, the track's premier race.  Sent off at odds of 5/1, Anderson and Hammers Bullet sat in second while long shot Big Blue Caboose set the early fractions.  As the field neared the top of the stretch, Anderson gave his horse his cue and they got to the lead into the stretch, but it wasn't so easy from there.
