Portland Meadows successful summer meet concludes; fall racing starts Wed. Oct. 2

Sunday marked the end of the Summer portion of the Portland Meadows 2013/14 season. Sixteen days of racing were conducted during the summer portion of the season, starting with opening day on Sunday July 21st, which saw thousands of customers come through the doors to watch racing under the Portland sunshine. Racing continues all fall and into the winter on Wednesdays and Sundays with an earlier first post of 12pm (Pacific).

Aloha Sweetheart wins the Far West Futurity

Aloha Sweetheart was acting up in the gate prior to the running of the $19,900 Far West Futurity on Sunday.
But jockey Jordan Hadley got his runner to calm down and run powerfully to take the 350 yard event. Aloha Sweetheart broke decently from the outside but really found her stride in the middle portions of the race.

Pick 5 Carryover for Sunday September 22nd

Nobody could navigate the rough Pick 5 waters on Wednesday at Portland Meadows as some long shots forced a one day carryover of $2,292.71 into the Pick 5 sequence on Sunday September 22nd. 

The Portland Meadows Pick 5 always covers races 5 through 9 at the track and features a low $0.25 cent base.  The wager also features a player friendly 15% takeout rate. 

The fifth race on Sunday gets underway at 3:33pm (Pacific).

Crew Leader wins the Portland Mile

Crew Leader stalked the early pace and drew off down the lane to win the 49th running of the $38,700 Portland Mile on Monday at Portland Meadows. Sent off as the 5/2 second choice in the field of seven, Crew Leader ($7.40) set up shop in second early as jockey Debbie Hoonan yielded to Touch the Sun who wanted to set the pace.

Portland Meadows to pay out $140,000 in purses on Portland Mile Day

The Portland Mile on Labor Day September 2nd is not only the richest race of the season at Portland Meadows boasting a purse of $35,000 added, but the entire card of racing will feature $140,000 in purses to be distributed.

“It’s going to be a great day for the track and for the horsemen here,” said Director of Racing Jerry Kohls. “Labor Day has become a day that many of the horsemen here point to because they know it’s a chance for their best horses to really earn some nice paydays.”
