Sportive pulls a shocker winning the Crater Lake Handicap; New Years Day Stakes Recap

Sportive blew up the tote board on Thursday as he rang in the New Year with a 22/1 upset in the $9,800 Crater Lake Handicap. Sportive ($46.40) was the sixth longest price in the field and sat a good trip in third early on, just behind dueling leaders Memphis Mobster and Johnski. Jockey Javier Matias angled Sportive to the outside as they came to the top of the stretch and they gradually wore down Johnski, getting up in the final strides to win by three quarters of a length. Johnski was second with Stoney River closing to finish third.

Beem on the Backside 12/19/14

What a beautiful morning today back on the Portland Meadows backstretch. The sun was out, everything was trying to dry up from the rain the last few days and everyone was out and about training and enjoying the decent temperatures. The power poles looked to be all back up from last week’s wind storm and I saw the electrician in Cindie’s Backside Café enjoying his breakfast saying that he had just one or two more transformers to repair. Power seems to be all back up on the backside as lots of horses were out on the hotwalkers.
