By Tom Harris for 11-13-17

Portland, Or- A field of eight will look to conquer The Mt Hood Handicap at a flat mile worth $10,000 added as co-high weights Grinder Sparksaglo and Papa Frank take on a half-dozen others in the two turn test.

Richard Sena’s Grinder Sparksaglo or “Elvis” as he’s known by his handlers is coming off of back to back stakes wins in the recent Flying Huey Stakes at six furlongs and The Inaugural on opening day at five and one half furlongs. Trained by Robbie Baze, the six year old son of Grindstone will get the services of Jockey Kevin Orozco who recorded an amazing five wins on last Tuesday’s card at the Portland oval. Grinder Sparksaglo took second best honors in last year’s Portland Meadows Mile thus proving he can handle the mile distance.

Papa Frank looms as the main rival after a menacing rush to be runner-up to Grinder Sparksaglo in The Inaugural and Flying Huey. Racing for Shane Bailey and Mary Tate, the five year old son of Papa Clem should find the mile distance right in his wheelhouse for Trainer Mary Tate and Jockey Jose Zunino, though a fierce stretch battle may be in store.

Delineator Express could pose as the spoiler and pick up the pieces late after showing his late footed style in The Flying Huey Stakes to capture third under the guidance of Jockey Leonel Camacho Flores. Trained by Rigoberto Velasquez for Rancho Viejo and Lisa Baze, The six year old son of Delineator has been a closing threat in most every start.

The Mt Hood will be the ninth race of the ten race card that will get underway at twelve noon at Portland Meadows.
