UPDATE--Mark Anderson wins Manitoba Lotteries Derby---Local Jockeys ride in the $75,000 Manitoba Lotteries Derby on Monday August 1st at Assiniboia Downs

UPDATE 8/1/11--Jockey Mark Anderson and Hammers Bullet sat just off the pace to win the $75,000 Manitoba Lotteries Derby on Monday at Assiniboia Downs, the track's premier race.  Sent off at odds of 5/1, Anderson and Hammers Bullet sat in second while long shot Big Blue Caboose set the early fractions.  As the field neared the top of the stretch, Anderson gave his horse his cue and they got to the lead into the stretch, but it wasn't so easy from there.

"That other horse dug in big time," said Anderson.  "He started to come back at me, but luckily my horse kept digging in as well.  He was coming into this race so sharp, we blew him out the week before and he put up a fast time over this track, which is usually pretty slow in the mornings."

The win in the $75,000 event was the biggest of Mark Anderson's career and he commented about what a great experience the entire day was.

"This is the biggest race i've won," said Anderson.  "This is a very historical and important race up here, the Queen of England even came to watch this race once.  Afterwards they took us upstairs for the press conference, but also to a nice cocktail party and we cut the big cake, it was quite a presentation!"

Next stop for Hammers Bullet and Mark Anderson could be the prestigious $300,000 Canadian Derby at Northlands Park later this month.

"Clay Brinson the trainer is very realistic," said Anderson.  "I'd be very excited to go race in a race like the Canadian Derby, but there will be some tough runners in there, so we shall see."

David Lopez and Mark Anderson are both having summers to remember riding at Assiniboia Downs.  Lopez is currently atop the riders standings at the Winnipeg, Manitoba track with 44 wins, 15 clear of his nearest rivals.  His mounts have earned $333,452 during the meeting thus far that began in May.  Anderson is fourth in the standings in wins with 22, but he is second in purse earnings, as his runners have amassed earnings of $236,806.

Both riders spend their winters at Portland Meadows and their summers at Assiniboia, and they will both be riding in the 63rd running of the $75,000 Manitoba Lotteries Derby on Monday August 1st.  Portland Meadows will be carrying the event via simulcasting as Lopez will be on board possible favorite El Grayling, who kept some serious company earlier this year.  In February he finished third beaten just over two lengths in an allowance at Gulfstream Park by Preakness winner Shackleford.   Mark Anderson will be on board Hammers Bullett who comes off a sharp wire to wire score in the Harry Jeffrey Stakes at Assiniboia.

Entries and final post positions will be drawn later in the week, for a list of probable entrants and their past performances click here.

First post for Assiniboia on Monday August 1st is at 11:00am and Portland Meadows will have all the action.
