Ten entered for the Portland Mile on Labor Day
Ten horses have been entered to run in the 49th running of the $35,000 Portland Mile on Labor Day, Monday September 2nd. Why Not Be Perfect drew the number two post-position and will carry the burden of 125 pounds as the high weight. The six year old is a multiple stakes winner and finished sixth in the Grade 3 Longacres Mile last time out. His regular rider Anne Sanguinetti will ride for trainer Jeff Metz, who is currently second in the Emerald Downs trainers standings. His main competition for favoritism in the race could come from Rocky’s Quest who drew the far outside post. Rocky’s Quest is coming off a huge win in an allowance event at Emerald Downs, and has won 8 of 20 lifetime races for trainer Blaine Wright. Juan Gutierrez will ship down from Emerald Downs to take the ride.
Dare Me Devil is the only horse in the race to have started at Portland Meadows and is only one of two horses with more than three local starts. His last start was a convincing last-to-first win in the $15,000 Oregon H.B.P.A. Sprint. Michael Iammarino will take over the mount on Dare Me Devil for trainer Rigoberto Velasquez.
Most of the runners in the Portland Mile are shipping down from Emerald Downs, including Candy for Debbie and Polish Dollar. Candy for Debbie won a good allowance event down at Pleasanton before finishing fifth last time out behind Rocky’s Quest. Polish Dollar is a speedy sort that already has two big allowance wins at Emerald Downs this season.
Lesson in Deceit was third in the Portland Mile last year and returns for Boise based trainer Ron Stevens, father of Hall of Famer Gary Stevens. Lesson in Deceit was a closing third in his last start, when he finished behind Rocky’s Quest. Memo To Mya also ships in from Boise where she won two stakes events over the summer and draws the riding services of jockey Joe Crispin for the Portland Mile.
Snowbound Hero, Crew Leader, and Touch the Sun complete the field of ten. The Portland Mile is carded as race 9 on the card with post time scheduled for 5:33pm (Pacific).
