Swiss Exploit and Mamoonya top Leg 1 of the Oregon H.B.P.A. Route Claiming Series
Swiss Exploit got back to his winning ways on Wednesday as he won the first of two divisions of Leg 1 of the Oregon H.B.P.A. Route Claiming Series. Sent off at odds of 9/1, Swiss Exploit ($20.40) and jockey Javier Matias found themselves mid-pack early, but racing out in the clear and only about five lengths off the pace set by Tiz I Is. Odds on favorite Doctor Pav came up to put a nose in front at the three eights pole, but Swiss Exploit was quick to challenge him as they arrived at the top of the stretch. Those two battled the entire way down the lane, with Swiss Exploit prevailing late to win by a neck. Doctor Pave was second, over six lengths ahead of Tiz I Is who ran third. Windshadows and Steel Blue finished fourth and fifth respectively.
Doctor Pav was one of two horses claimed out of the first division, as he’ll head to the barn of owner/trainer Ron Haasl. Gone Clever was off of his eight place finish and will go to the barn of trainer Jim Fergason.
Mamoonya ($13.00) battled bravely with Castle Pines and pulled away from all his eight competitors late to win the second division by three and three quarter lengths. Sent off at odds of 5/1, Mamoonya and jockey Leonel Camacho-Flores went hard after the lead, but Camacho-Flores decided to yield to Castle Pines as they went into the first turn. That proved to be a smart move as they were able to save some energy down the backstretch. Mamoonya came back after Castle Pines on the final turn and pulled away down the lane to score with ease. Shakereadynroll burst out of the pack to finish second ahead of It’s Our Pleasure who ran third. Adam N Ryan and Over And Under finished fourth and fifth respectively. The final time for the mile and one sixteenth was 1:48.09.
The 2nd Leg will be run on November 13th and in order to be eligible for the $15,000 Final that will be run on December 4th, horses will need to be among the top twelve point earners in the preliminary legs. The 2nd Leg is a $3,200 claimer at one mile and one eighth while the Final is a $4,000 event at a mile and one quarter.
