Summer Racing is Back!
Summer racing is back at Portland Meadows! Building upon our successful inaugural summer race meet, opening day for the 2013/14 live race meet is set for Sunday, July 21, 2013.
The 2013/2014 race meet will cover 49 live race dates (pending Oregon Racing Commission (ORC) approval) with racing on Sunday and Wednesday afternoons. Racing will begin with a one day a week schedule before introducing a second live day in mid August. Live racing at Portland Meadows will continue through closing day – Sunday, January 26, 2014.
In addition to opening day, two other “can’t miss” days of the meet will be Portland Mile Day – A special holiday Monday (Labor Day) card of racing Monday, September 2, 2013 - and Oregon Championship Day – Sunday, November 17, 2013.
Post time in July through September will be 1:45 p.m. each race day. In October through January, post time will be 12:00 p.m.
As a result in the reduction in live race days, and the financial contribution of the Oregon Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association (OHBPA), purses will be raised significantly over the previous race meet. In the 2012 Summer/Fall race meet the bottom purse was $3,000 ($1,600 claiming level). The bottom purse of the 2013/14 race meet will be $5,000 ($2,000 claiming level) which represents a remarkable 67% increase meet over meet.
“Summer racing saw tens of thousands new people be introduced to live racing at Portland Meadows and the horse racing industry in Oregon,” said GM Will Alempijevic. “By working with our partners in racing, and learning from last year and making a few adjustments we have built what we believe will be the groundwork for a strong and stable industry going forward.”
Promotions and events for live racing will be announced shortly.
