Racing Fan adds Portland Meadows to his list of tracks visited
Dale Hargrave added Portland Meadows to his growing list of tracks he’s visited on Wednesday. The 64 year-old former Social Studies teacher from Virginia has turned his passion for racing into a long and fun journey. Portland Meadows is the 40th track Hargrave has visited since he started following racing back in 1964.
“I remember seeing Northern Dancer win the Kentucky Derby that year,” said Hargrave. “I got interested and started going to the races. Since I live close to Baltimore, starting with Snow Chief’s Preakness in 1986, I’ve been to the Preakness every year.”
Hargrove’s list of tracks that he’s visited now numbers 40 as he added Golden Gate Fields and Portland Meadows to his list after visiting Santa Anita for the Breeders’ Cup earlier this month.
“I’m trying to get to fifty tracks and Emerald Downs and some of the Oregon fairs are certainly next on my list of places to hit,” said Hargrave.
Hargrave listed Saratoga and Keeneland as his two favorite tracks he’s visited thus far.
“Saratoga is just so beautiful,” said Hargrave. “The ambiance, the beauty and the fact that it’s out in the country really makes it just something special. Every spring a group of friends of mine, we all go to Keeneland for Blue Grass week and then go tour around the farms. Gio Ponti is my new favorite stallion after getting to visit with him.”
Hargrave admits he isn’t much of a bettor, but will occasionally throw $20 through the windows on days like the Breeders’ Cup. He’s also an avid photographer and loves to take photos of his days at the track.
Hargrave said he really enjoyed the facility and beauty of a day at the races at Portland Meadows.
“The artwork when you walk in was just fabulous,” said Hargrave. “It was really a fun little track and I’m so glad to have gotten to spend a day at the races here. Hopefully I’ll be back!”
