Portland Meadows ends season with gains in average daily handle and field size

Portland Meadows wrapped up its 65thseason of live racing on Wednesday March 14th. 

Fifty-Five (55) live race days were conducted between Opening Day on October 17thand Closing Day on March 14th

All sources handle totaled $38,001,156 during the 2011-12 season for an average daily handle of $690,930.  This represents a 2.63% increase from the average daily handle of $673,215 from the 73 live-day 2010-11 season.

“Portland Meadows staff and Horsemen worked hard and more importantly worked together to ensure the meet was a success,” said General Manager Will Alempijevic.  “We are very pleased with the handle results from the meet which benefited from our promotions including the Portland Meadows Ultimate ShowVivor Contest and the newly established Claiming Series’ on the track, both of which generated a lot of interest and support.” 

A total of $2,311,000 was paid in out in purses during the season for an average purse payout of $42,018 per race day. 

This season the average number of starters per race increased to 7.70 from 7.45 last season.

On the track, Javier Matias won his first Portland Meadows riding title.  Matias won 70 races from 348 mounts, good for a 20.11% winning percentage.  Luis Torres topped the Quarter Horse riding standings with 18 victories.

Felimon Alvarado took home his first Portland Meadows training title winning 34 races from 104 starts.  Juan Sanguino took home the Quarter Horse training title with 16 wins on the season. 

Portland Meadows continues to be open daily for simulcast wagering.  Live racing will return for the Inaugural Summer Race Meet on Sunday July 15, 2012.  The Portland Meadows live racing schedule will cover sixty (60) live race days from Sunday July 15, 2012 to Saturday December 8, 2012.
