Nominations released for Oregon Championship Day at Portland Meadows

Nominations released for Oregon Championship Day at Portland Meadows

Nominations for the six stakes events that will be run on Oregon Championship Day on November 17th were released Wednesday night at Portland Meadows. Five $15,000 Thoroughbred Stakes will be run, as well as a pair of $7,500 starter allowances and the $17,000 Baxter Andruss Futurity for Quarter Horses. Post time for Oregon Championship Day will be Portland Meadows traditional 12:00pm (Pacific) start time.

Middas Gold Touch (Pictured in Winner's Circle at Right) will look to defend his title in the $15,000 Lethal Grande Oregon Sprint Championship. Thirteen runners were nominated for the six furlong event. Middas Gold Touch struggled this summer at Assiniboia Downs in Winnipeg, Manitoba and had two lackluster finishes in his return to Portland Meadows this fall. But he got back on track just last week with a nice allowance score, besting Calypsonoted, who is also nominated for the Lethal Grande Sprint Championship. Promiscuous Lad was third behind those two in the allowance and should improve in his second start back at Portland Meadows.

The $15,000 Janet Wineberg Stakes for two year old fillies drew just five nominations, but one of those nominees is Jet Set Kitten (Pictured at right with Green silks/orange sleeves), who was smashing in her debut when she won the Catalina Harbor Stakes back on Labor Day. She’ll be up against some first time starters, including Dreamstone Cowgirl, whose mother One Fast Cowgirl won this race in her career debut.

The $15,000 Bill Wineberg Stakes for two year old colts and geldings closed with nine nominations. Numerous first time starters are part of the nominated group, including Stoney River. Stoney River is owned by Larry and Gay Welliver, who sent her half brother Cantchaco to a debut win in the Bill Wineberg just last year. Maddies Gold is far and away the most accomplished of the horses with experience, as she had two wins up at Assiniboia Downs this past summer, including a score in the $30,000 Osiris Stakes.

Jack The Pirate could be tough as he leads a list of eight nominees for the $15,000 Oregon His Stakes. Jack The Pirate won the Tom Two Stakes back on Labor Day and was just third in tough allowance against older rivals. Cantchaco and Captainnotsosober were rivals last year in the Bill Wineberg and Don Jackson Futurity and both are nominated for the Oregon His.

Calypsonoted (Pictured at Right)  headlines the six nominees for the $15,000 Oregon Hers. She’s cross nominated for the Lethal Grande Sprint and has been competing well against the boys in her last two starts. She was a perfect three for three as a two year old including a great win in the $25,000 Don Jackson Futurity on Oregon Championship Day last year.

Nine runners nominated for the $7,500 Oregon Distaff Starter and twelve horses nominated for the $7,500 Oregon Fall Starter Handicap.

Nominations can be found HERE listed under each respective stakes race.
