Nineteen runners entered for Leg 1 of the McFadden Memorial Claiming Series

Nineteen runners were entered into two separate divisions for Leg 1 of the Inaugural McFadden Memorial Sprint Claiming Series that begins on Wednesday November 2nd at Portland Meadows.  The races were carded as races 7 and 8 on Wednesday and are both $2,500 claiming events going five furlongs.  The second leg of the series will be in two weeks on Wednesday November 16th, which is a $4,000 Claiming event with a $5,000 added purse.  The finals will be on Wednesday December 7th, which will be a 6 furlong event with a $28,000 estimated purse.  Horses must compete in both the first two legs of the series to advance to the finals, with a point system being used to determine which 12 horses will get into the final field.

The point system for the first two legs:
1st Place---5 points
2nd Place---4 points
3rd Place---3 points
4th Place---2 points
5th Place--- 1 point

The first of the two divisions of Leg 1 is the 7th race on Wednesday November 2nd which is led by a pair of tough Canadian shippers for trainer Malcolm Beveridge.  Colonel Courtney has been running for open $7,500 and $6,500 claiming levels at Hastings Park, and has amassed 24 wins from 103 starts in his brilliant career, including over $377,000 in earnings.  His Stable-mate is Rallying Cry who comes off a second place finish for $7,500 and will be ridden by Joe Crispin.  Rallying Cry has already earned $328,660 in his career in just 37 starts.  Heading up the local runners in this dash are Castle Pines for Nick Lowe and Brainstorm for Rigoberto Velasquez.

The second division is a cast of 9 runners with another tough Beveridge horse, Declan Downs.  He’s been a sprint specialist up in Canada and will ship in and be ridden by Joe Crispin.  Getrdonegotrdid is always a dangerous sprinter and is coming off the layoff for owner Art McFadden, whose family the Claiming Series is named after.  Jonathan Nance will send out a pair of runners and the red-hot Felimon Alvarado barn will send out Deputy Allstar with Jockey Juan Gutierrez on board.

An interesting part of the Claiming Series is that in the first two legs, all runners are up for the claiming prices.  So there should be lots of action at the claiming box as trainers and owners might try to claim runners in the first or second leg, so that they have them in the 3rd leg when they are running for a $28,000 added purse.

The McFadden Memorial Claiming Series gets underway on Wednesday November 2nd, with races 7 and 8.  Post time for the 7th is 2:48pm (Pacific).
