My Mounts - Sun Aug 31 - Luis Torres

My Mounts is a daily feature where Track Announcer Jason Beem talks with a jockey to get their thoughts on the horses they will be riding for a particular live race day. Today our guest is our current leading rider Luis Torres. Luis has been a regular at Portland Meadows over the last half decade or so and is one of the friendliest riders in the room. A consummate family man, you will often see his wife Mayra and daughter Keyley Camila cheering him on at the races each day. Luis is off to an unbelievable start with 40 total wins through the first 16 days of racing and leads both the Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse standings.

Race 1 BA See Spot Run
“He’s the paint horse and he looks like he can run, he beat me when I was on Baxter’s other horse last time out. I like him a little better outside but we’ll be ok. The horse to our inside (Royal Star Max) could be tough in this race.”

Race 2 Snowbound Superchik
“I absolutely like this horse. He showed me he can run a lot last time. I rode him for the first time last time out and he won easy. I told Juan Sanguino the horse ran with his head a little bit high, so they might try a shadow roll with him this time to keep him more focused.”

Race 3 Tuxedo Dollys
“I’ve ridden this horse two times and this horse hasn’t run well for me yet. I’m hoping to get a better a better break from the outside, because we don’t have to worry about getting pressure by the other horses.”

Race 4 Feels Like Rain
“I rode this horse last year here and she didn’t run that well. I think that her dropping down to $2,500 should really help her out. She’s run her best races going to the lead and there isn’t much speed in this race, so we might try to go to the lead.”

Race 6 Sydney on My Mind
“Last time out she passed a horse to take the lead and she was just waiting for the other horse to come back. I think she should win, but she is taking on the boys, but with her I’m not worried about it.”

Race 7 Elliegant One
“Steve Fisher changed the equipment last time and I lost the whip at the eighth pole last time, so I think Steve is going to change it back so hopefully she can go back to her winning form. I like this filly, she’s very consistent and tries hard.”

Race 9 Zairsacat
“He’s coming from Emerald Downs and Steve Fisher told me that this is a Delineator horse and they are crazy. I’ve never ridden the horse before, so I’ll look at the form and talk with Steve Fisher to see what the best way to ride this horse is.”
