Midnight Matty and Scent of Chrism pull upsets in Leg 2 of the City of Roses Filly and Mare Sprint Claiming Series

Midnight Matty lit up the toteboard as she and Debbie Hoonan pulled off a 31/1 upset, winning the second division of Leg 2 of the City of Roses Filly and Mare Sprint Claiming Series. Midnight Matty ($65.00) went right to the front, jumping out ahead of heavily favored Salon Blonde who got away third today. Midnight Matty was pressed by Salon Blonde going to the quarter pole, but Midnight Matty had some gas left in the tank and kicked clear in mid-stretch. Carlotta Del Sol and All the Rage both started to close in late, but neither could get to Midnight Matty who won by a length, stopping the clock in 1:06.84 seconds for the five and one half furlongs. Carlotta Del Sol finished second with All the Rage rounding out the trifecta. Salon Blonde finished fourth while Wild Chica was fifth.

Patti Harris trained Midnight Matty to the win for herself and ownership partner Dana Pettibone. Salon Blonde was the most popular horse at the claim box, as an 8 way shake led to owner/trainer Carol Duby getting Salon Blonde. All The Rage was also claimed and now goes to the barn of Charles Essex, who won the horse in a 6 way shake. Both were claimed for $3,200, which was the claiming level for Leg 2.

It was Scent of Chrism ($16.80) who sprung a slight upset in the first division of Leg 2, rallying from seventh early on to get up in the final furlong to win by two and a quarter lengths. Sent off at odds of 7/1, Scent of Chrism waited as favored Controlableimpulse and Chelsea’s Flame went out and battled through an opening quarter of 22.43 seconds. Chelsea’s Flame disposed of Controlableimpulse at the top of the lane, but Scent of Chrism and Jose Zunino came roaring late to get up for the win. Chelsea’s Flame finished second while Drawing Breath closed up to get third. Gotaminute finished fourth with Controlableimpulse fifth.

Jim Fergason owned and trained the winner who wasn’t claimed. Controlableimpulse was claimed in a 2 way shake and goes to the barn of trainer Nick Lowe. Drawing Breath was claimed by trainer Pablo DeJesus, who got the horse in a 3 way shake.
