Leg 2 of the Route Claiming Series on Saturday afternoon

Leg 2 of the Route Claiming Series on Saturday afternoon

Nineteen runners have been entered in two divisions of Leg 2 of the O.H.B.P.A. Route Claiming Series on Saturday November 17th. Carded as races five and seven on the nine race program, these horses are competing to accrue points to earn one of the coveted twelve spots in the $20,000 Final that will be run on closing day, Sunday December 9th. Here is the point system used in Leg’s 1 and 2, with the top twelve point earners getting a spot in the Final.

1st Place-5 points
2nd Place-4 points
3rd Place-3 points
4th Place-2 points
5th Place-1 point

Race 7 looks to have come up the tougher than race 5, with all three winners of Leg 1 drawn into that event. Castle Pines drew the rail for new owners Glory B Stables and trainer Mary Boyle who claimed him for $2,500 out of Leg 1. Debbie Hoonan was on board for that six length score back on October 28th and will once again be on Castle Pines on Saturday. Castle Pines is one for one at the one mile and one eighth distance of Leg 2 that he will run on Saturday, as he took Leg 2 of last year’s Route Claiming Series. Castle Pines time in Leg 1 was over a second faster than either of the other divisions.

Havin a Good Day won his division of Leg 1 and came back last week and ran a fifth place finish against open $5,000 claimers. He wasn’t claimed out of Leg 1 and Anne Sanguinetti will once again be on board for trainer Jesse Velasquez. Havin a Good Day is a speed horse as is Castle Pines, so the battle for the early lead will be a contested one. Strikingly Sinful was the other Leg 1 winner and usually employs a stalking style in his races. He is a perfect two for two over the Portland Meadows surface and Marijo Terleski will be back on board, but this time for trainer Don Young who claimed the horse out of Leg 1 for $2,500.

Race 5 will feature nine runners including A. Lurie Girl who just missed by a neck in Leg 1, getting outkicked by Strikingly Sinful. A. Lurie Girl was claimed by trainer Nick Lowe out of Leg 1 who is having a fantastic meeting and has been strong off the claim. Overtime Victory is one to watch in this race as well, as trainer Steve Fisher claimed him and will put Javier Matias on board for Leg 2. Overtime Victory was thirty two lengths off the pace at the half mile mark last time out, and just didn’t get going until much too late. His deep closing style could be tough for him though, as there is little speed signed on in this division. Formula Gold finished second behind Havin a Good Day in Leg 1 and managed to avoid being claimed and will once again run for trainer Jonathan Nance and jockey Luis Torres in Leg 2.

First post time on Saturday afternoon is 1pm (pacific) with the O.H.B.P.A. Route Claiming Series races carded as races 5 and 7.
