Judy Griffin is now the 'Queen of Alexander'
Judy Griffin went to the lead early and never looked back as she went on to take the King/Queen of Alexander Handicapping Championship to take home the title of “Queen of Alexander” and maybe more importantly, took home $1,200 cash and will receive a custom Queen of Alexander jacket. Griffin got to Alexander OTB early on the night of the Championship, with her picks all selected and ready to roll. The contest consisted of eight races from Jacksonville and Flagler, and Griffin proved that it wasn’t long shots that were needed to win, but rather consistency. The contest consisted of a Win/Place format and Griffin had only two winners, who returned her $22.80 and $24.40 respectively, but it was her five runner up selections that made up $29.20 worth of cashes to push her total up to $76.40 for the eight race contest, $21 ahead of Neil Blake who finished second. Neil Handy was another $.60 behind in third, with $54.80. Blake collected $500 for second and Handy picked up $300 for his third place effort.
Griffin was one of two ladies in the contest, the other being Sherry Gustafson who finished in fifth place. Griffin did not qualify for the event, but rather bought in for $50, against the wishes of her partner Larry Ford, who had qualified by winning qualifier #2.
“I told her, ‘Judy, these guys are tough handicappers, are you sure you want to buy in against them,” said Ford.
Well Griffin’s confidence proved worthwhile as she cruised to a big win, and for atleast the next year, is the Reigning Queen of Alexander.
