Jim Fergason scores career win #1,000
Jim Fergaason has been a staple at Portland Meadows for over 4 decades now and on Wednesday he cemented his status as a legendary trainer in these parts, scoring his 1,000th career victory. Fergason has been based at Portland Meadows since 1969 when he won his first race, a 99 to 1 Quarter Horse winner. Fergason has won six training titles over the years at Portland Meadows, and has had success shipping to tracks like Emerald Downs and Assiniboia Downs during the summer months. Fergason has won countless stakes events at Portland Meadows including the OTOBA Futurity with Wisco Cat. He also took the $40,000 Auburn Handicap in 2004 with Crimson Design.
“I’m happy I got this win here,” said Fergason. “Probably 900 of those wins came right here so I’m really happy about that.”
The 1,000th win came with Mo’s Flashy Date who took command at the top of the stretch and held off numerous challengers to win under Fergason’s main rider, Mark Anderson. Mo’s Flashy Date was owned and bred by Marvin Pietila.
