Hannibal Lector sets a new 220 yard track record
Hannibal Lector broke beautifully under jockey Luis Torres and went on to an easy win in Saturday’s second race. Carded at the rare 220 yard distance, the 10 year old gelding established a new track record for the distance, completing the course in 12.12 seconds, besting the 59 year old record set by Gold Bar 49 back on July 25, 1959, when he ran the course in 12.20.
“He got in a little bit at the start,” said jockey Luis Torres who swept the early Quarter Horse Daily Double on Saturday. “But other than that he went pretty straight and he was in front after just a couple of jumps.”
Hannibal Lector has now won 18 of his 70 career starts with earnings of over $82,000. He is owned by Mario Escobedo and trained by leading Quarter Horse trainer Juan Sanguino.
