Full field of twelve to go in the $15,000 City of Roses Sprint Claiming Series Final on Wednesday 11/20

Twelve fillies and mares have battled their way through the first two legs of the City of Roses Filly and Mare Sprint Claiming Series and will now look to complete the journey on Wednesday November 20th, as the $15,000 Final will be contested at six furlongs at Portland Meadows with a $4,000 claiming tag. The horses have been accruing points in the first two legs based on their finishing position and now they’ll get a chance to run for the $15,000 purse, which is $9,000 more than what a traditional open $4,000 claimer would be at Portland Meadows.

Scent of Chrism (Pictured at right) was given the role of morning line favorite at 9/2. Coming off a sensational two and a quarter length win in Leg 2, Scent of Chrism made it through the first two legs of the series without being claimed away from trainer Jim Fergason. It is interesting to note though, Scent of Chrism is 0 for 11 at the six furlong distance of the Final.

One of the interesting tidbits of the City of Roses Filly and Mare Sprint Claiming Series is that no horse swept through the first two legs even though there were multiple divisions of both. All The Rage finished second in Leg 1 and third in Leg 2 but was closing well in both of those efforts. The six furlong distance might allow her a little more time to make her big late kick. She was claimed out of Leg 1 by Roger Stevenson and claimed right back in Leg 2 by Charles Essex, who had her before.

For a Sprint Series race, there isn’t a ton of confirmed early speed, so the pace picture will be a tough one to decipher. Midknight Matty shook loose to an easy lead last time and scored a 31/1 upset. Other speedy runners include Chelsea’s Flame and Salon Blonde, both of whom should be mixing it up early on the front end.

The $15,000 Final for the City of Roses Filly and Mare Sprint Claiming Series will be run as the 7th race on Wednesday with an approximate post time of 2:52pm (Pacific). First post at Portland Meadows is at 12:00pm (Pacific).

News and Notes….95 horses were entered for the 10 race card on Wednesday November 20th. The $0.25 Pick 5 covers races 5 through 9 and features a takeout rate of 15%. The $1 Pick Four covers races 7 through 10 and features just a 14% takeout rate.
