Female Riders sweep first six at Portland Meadows

It was Ladies’ Day at Portland Meadows on Tuesday as female riders swept the first six races on the card.  The day started off with Debbie Hoonan-Trujillo and BA See Spot Run score as 2 to 1 favorite.  Eliska Kubinova took race two aboard Mr. Easy Okie as the 5/2 second choice in a dominating length and a quarter victory.  It was Marijo Terleski’s turn in the third race as she guided Mindbogler to a 9/2 win in a hard fought battle over My Ginny N Tonic, ridden by Debbie Hoonan-Trujillo who finished up in second.

Debbie Hoonan-Trujillo found her way back to the Winner’s Circle in the fourth race as she and Silk Cape teamed up for their second consecutive win together for trainer John Maloney, this time at a nice 5 to 1 price.

The upsets really came on in race 5 though as Eliska Kubinova and Our Roadrunner took command on the far turn and opened up down the lane to score 23 to 1 for trainer Martin Kenney.  The biggest upset of the day came in maybe the most impressive performance of the day when Shawna Whiteside and Revoluta absolutely blitzed a field of runners, taking of and winning by five and three quarter lengths at odds of 46 to 1 and returned $94.80 for a two dollar win ticket.

Portland Meadows has a great history of female riders including a number who have won riding titles.  Kathy Mayo won the Portland Meadows’ riding title twice, in 1995 and 1997, Shannon Ritter won in 1991, Karen Knapp in 1987 and most recently Debbie Hoonan-Trujillo in 2009/10.
