Fantasyville and Black N Silver upset the favorites in Leg 2 of the City of Roses Filly and Mare Sprint Claiming Series

The Inaugural City of Roses Filly and Mare Sprint Claiming Series ran two divisions of Leg 2 on Wednesday Night, setting the table for the $20,000 Final on Wednesday September 19th. Two divisions competed, both at five and one half furlongs and for a $4,000 claiming price. The action on the track was fast and furious as was the action at the claim box. Horses have to run in both this first leg which was run on August 15th and then in the second leg to be eligible for the $20,000 Series Final on September 19th. The horses accrue points in the first two legs, with the top 12 point earners getting a spot in the gate for the finals.

In the first of two divisions of Leg 2 it was Fantasyville and Eliska Kubinova who rode the rail to victory in a mild upset, besting the 2/5 favorite in the race Giacomina by three quarters of a length. Fantasyville ($8.00) was stalking from just off the pace as Giacomina set the opening fraction of 22.57 seconds, which was pretty quick for the evening. Fantasyville wasn’t claimed out of either the first or second leg and will go into the finals for trainer Judith Miller and owner Debra Larson. Giacomina, who was making her first start for trainer Darlene Braden who claimed the horse out of Leg 1, finished in second, with Due South running third. Known as Lu closed in to get fourth while Lei of Gold closed from last to grab fifth and earn a point towards qualifying for the final. The final time for the five and one half furlongs was 1:06.96 seconds.

Due South was claimed out of the race by owner Susan Calvert for trainer Michael Bullene while Giacomina was claimed via a 4 way shake, ending up in the barn of owner/trainer Jerry Lynn.

Division 2 of Leg 2 saw Black N Silver absolutely dominate in impressive fashion, drawing off late under jockey Rocco Bowen to win by 9 and one quarter lengths in a time of 1:05.91, over a second faster than the first division. Black N Silver ($7.80) broke very sharply from her outside post and was hustled for the early lead. But Marijo Terleski and Sweet Pleasure would have none of that as they come up the inside to challenge and those two dueled through an opening quarter mile of 22.62 seconds. As they came to the quarter pole, Bowen asked Black N Silver for more, and the three year old filly had plenty left in the tank as she drew away with ease. Sweet Pleasure did hold on for second, while Cascadian’s Story who was running for the first time for owner/trainer Shawna Whiteside could only manage third. Go Ocho Go finished in fourth with Rich Debut running fifth.

Black N Silver was claimed by Circle D Racing for $4,000 for trainer Sam Dronen, who will have the horse in the $20,000 Final. Cascadian’s Storey was claimed in a 10 way shake and will go to the barn of owner/trainer Gilbert Daniels.

The $20,000 final of the City of Roses Filly and Mare Sprint Claiming Series is on September 19th.
