Dennis Wittcke Takes The $2,000 So. Cal Sunday Final

Dennis Wittcke went wire to wire on Sunday, but his win wasn’t on the track, but rather he took down the $2,000 final of Portland Meadows’ So. Cal Sunday Handicapping Contest.  The contest covered 10 weeks and began back in April, and consisted of weekly $200 contests, focusing exclusively on Southern California racing from Santa Anita Park and then Betfair Hollywood Park.  Each weekly contest, players would make their top selections for a series of races, with each pick getting a $2 win/place bet on it.  The top three money earners each week got paid, and the top two each week qualified for the $2,000 final on June 24th.

Wittcke was the leading qualifier, having qualified three times for the finals, giving him an advantage as he got to make three separate sets of picks.  Wittcke’s strategy however was to focus on his top picks, as he used the same horses on all three tickets in five of the six races.  The one race he did use three different horses in, he caught a 6/1 winner and boosted his score by $20.60 with the win and place score.  Wittcke picked the first three races cold and jumped out to a good size lead early on.  But after missing in the fourth leg, his closest competitor, Larry Arnsberg, made a move, and drew to within $2.00 of Wittcke’s total after four races.  But Wittcke came right back, picking the final two winners on top and going home with a winning total of $55.20 and earning a $1,200 pay day.  He finished $12.60 ahead of Don Waterman, who was a two time qualifier who finished second at $42.60 and took home the $500 second prize.   Waterman has been a Portland Meadows regular for decades and likes to focus on smaller tracks, so the So. Cal Sunday contest was one of his first ventures to playing the So. Cal circuit.  Larry Arnsberg, who is a long time owner and horseplayer in the Northwest, finished third with a total of $42.20 and took home a $300 third place prize.

Portland Meadows will continue the Handicapping Contest series on July 18th, when the weekly $1,000 Wednesday Night Turf Club Handicapping Contest kicks off.  For more information about that contest CLICK HERE.
