Castle Pines Dominates as Route Claiming Series Gets Underway

Castle Pines looked like his old self as the 9 year old veteran dominated the third division of Leg 1 of the Oregon H.B.P.A. Route Claiming Series that got underway on Sunday afternoon. The Oregon H.B.P.A. Route Claiming Series is a three part series, with Leg 1 being a $2,500 claimer run today and Leg 2 will be a $4,000 claimer run at one mile and one eighth on November 17th. The top 12 point earners from the first two legs will be eligible for the final which will be run on Closing Day of the 2012 season, Sunday December 9th and will be at one mile and one quarter and featuring a $20,000 purse. Here is the point system that horses will earn in Leg’s 1 and 2:

1st Place-5 points
2nd Place-4 points
3rd Place-3 points
4th Place-2 points
5th Place-1 point

Castle Pines was sent off as the 2/1 favorite in Division 3 and went right to the front and opened up a big lead while setting strong early fractions of 23.23 for the opening quarter and 46.43 for the opening half of the mile and one sixteenth race. Steel Blue tried to come after Castle Pines but never got close, as the wire came up with Castle Pines and Debbie Hoonan six lengths in front. Steel Blue finished second with Outside Shot nosing out Big Dave L for third. Zippin E. finished up in fifth.

Castle Pines was claimed and goes to new owners Glory B Stables for trainer Mary Boyle. The same connections also claimed the runner up Steel Blue in a two way shake. Overtime Victory was claimed in a three way shake and goes to the barn of Steve Fisher for owners Michael Pollowitz and Jeff Wilson.

In Division 1 it was Strikingly Sinful who ran his local record to a perfect two for two as he and Marijo Terleski won a hard fought stretch battle over A. Lurie Girl to win the mile and one sixteenth event. Terleski might have made the winning move at the 3/8ths pole when she guided Strikingly Sinful down on the rail and went inside of early pace setter Nick’s Gold. That move saved a lot of ground while A. Lurie Girl went three wide around Nick’s Gold. Those two hooked up for the final three sixteenths with just a neck separating them at the wire. Game Emperor closed from last to get up for third while Thunderclap Newman finished fourth, just ahead of Simperio in fifth. Strikingly Sinful completed the one mile and one sixteenth in 1:45.80 and paid $8.00 for the win.

Strikingly Sinful was one of four horses who were claimed for $2,500 in Division 1. He will now go to the barn of Don Young for owner Jose De La Paz. Runner-up A. Lurie Girl was claimed and will now move to the Nick Lowe barn for owner Roger Hamshar. Carol Dronen claimed Who’s Your Next Ex and her husband Sam Dronen will take over training duties. Game Emperor goes to the barn of owner/trainer Larry Ramnarine who put down $2,500 to claim that runner.

In Division 2 it was Havin a Good Day and Anne Sanguinetti who took her rivals on a merry chase, setting moderate fractions throughout and having plenty left for the drive as they held sway all the way to win by three and a half lengths in a time of 1:45.73. Havin a Good Day ($9.20) was claimed for $1,600 last time out and brought right back for this $2,500 event and was not claimed, so trainer Jesse Velasquez deserves a lot of credit picking that horse out and getting the win. Havin a Good Day finished ahead of Formula Gold who ran second, just ahead of Shakereadynroll who ran third. Over and Under closed in to get fouth ahead of Awesome Toccet who moved in from last to finish fifth and pick up a point.

Shakereadynroll was the only horse claimed out of the second division, with owner/trainer Patti Harris getting the horse in a three way shake.

Leg 2 of the Oregon H.B.P.A Route Claiming Series will be run on Saturday November 17th and will feature a $4,000 claiming price going one mile and one eighth.
