Castle Pines dominant once again in Route Series Leg 2

It was less than a year ago when Castle Pines took Leg 2 of last season’s Route Claiming Series, and it he was back at it once again on Saturday, scoring a two and a half length win in Leg 2 of the O.H.B.P.A. Route Claiming Series. Sent off as the 6/5 favorite in a field of ten, Castle Pines ($4.40) had to battle early on as Nick’s Gold pushed him through a demanding opening quarter mile of 23.25 seconds. Ridden by jockey Debbie Hoonan for trainer Mary Boyle who claimed Castle Pines last time out, Castle Pines disposed of Nick’s Gold early on down the backstretch and kept his lead throughout. Big Dave L made a mild move on the turn as did Strikingly Sinful, but Castle Pines was never in doubt as he completed the mile and one eighth in 1:52.58. Strikingly Sinful finished second with Big Dave L. in third. Game Emperor and Outside Shot, both at the back early, rallied up to finish fourth and fifth respectively.

Castle Pines was not claimed, however Game Emperor and Strikingly Sinful were for $4,000 each. Game Emperor goes to the barn of Chris Nunnally for owners Nunnally Racing Stables. Strikingly Sinful goes back to the Jonathan Nance barn for owners Jonathan Nance and Pat and Bob Cosgrove.

In the first division of Leg 2 it was Overtime Victory and Javier Matias who rolled from the back to get up and win by three quarters of a length over Doctor Pav in a hard fought stretch duel. Sent off at odds of 5/1, Overtime Victory ($12.40) found himself much closer than normal, as his preferred method in races recently has been to fall some thirty lengths behind and make a big run. Matias kept the horse only ten or so lengths off the pace early on which was set by A. Lurie Girl and Steel Blue. Making his first start for trainer Steve Fisher who claimed Overtime Victory last out, the six year old son of Victory Gallop made his patented move on the outside, gobbling up rivals with each and every stride and then outdueling Doctor Pav, who made a nice run through at the rail and finished second under Debbie Hoonan. Formula Gold got up for third with Shakereadynroll finishing fourth after a wide journey. Over and Under picked up an additional point while finishing fifth.

The final time for the one mile and one eighth journey was 1:52.70. Steel Blue was claimed out of the race for $4,000 by owner Tammy White and will go to the barn of trainer A. Lynn Homer while Shakereadynroll returns to the Jim Fergason barn for owners Mike Wilkins and Just Horsen Around.

The top twelve point earners will have a spot in the $20,000 Final of the O.H.B.P.A. Route Claiming Series on Sunday December 9th. That race is at one mile and one quarter.
