Portland, OR.- The most anticipated race of the season will take place this Sunday, January 28th, at Portland Meadows as a full field of ten are slated to meet in the $25,000 added event for The Portland Mile. Four year olds and up will make up the cast that has lured talent from local interests as well as California.

The top weight assignment was handed to John Martin & Troy Onorato’s Roaring Rule. Trained by John Martin, the five year old son of Tribal Rule recently won two starter claiming events at Golden Gate Fields after facing allowance optional claiming rivals at Santa Anita last year. Roaring Rule has been set at 2-1 on the opening line as he will break from the inside post position with Jockey Javier Matias.

Richard Sena’a Grinder Sparksaglo has the role of hometown Hero after winning four out of his five stakes showings at the Portland oval. Trained by Robbie Baze, Kevin Orozco will guide the seven year old son of Grindstone in the 50th edition of The Mile. Grinder Sparksaglo will break from post four.

Ontheshadyside won the Crater Lake Handicap at one mile for Owner Mike Robbins and Trainer Rigoberto Velasquez. The ten year old son of Matty G will be ridden by Leonel Camacho Flores. Ontheshadyside has been a menacing rival to Grinder Sparksaglo in all races they have met. Ontheshadyside drew post six for the contest.

Drink Til You Drop returns to The Northwest for The Mile bringing Bay Area Jockey Frank Alvarado in tow. Owned by Jacqui Navarre and Trained by Steve Fisher, the seven year old by Purim posted an October claiming win at Golden Gate after his 2017 Emerald Downs Campaign. The Kentucky Bred will race from post three in the Mile.

Mike Man’s Bro will break from the outside post and carry a likely longshot’s role for Horseplayer’s Racing Club #272 and Rodina Barrett who is also his Trainer. Mike Man’s Bro has been hearty in all recent starts and has won four races on the meet. Jockey David Martin will get the leg up to ride the four year old by Liberty Gold.

Dynamic Scoring hails from Little Barn Racing and Trained by Debbie Peery who will send Jake Samuels with the task atop the five year old son of Smoke Glacken from post positition nine. Dynamic Scoring has been stakes placed since arriving from Del Mar with a summertime win at Los Alamitos prior to that.

TD’S Gold will be sporting the colors of Rancho Viejo and Lisa Baze in The Mile after the eight year old son of Gotham City won his last three starts in The Rip City. Trained by Rigoberto Velasquez with Jose Zunino to ride, TD’s Gold has been very effective around two turns throughout his campaign as he breaks from post position five in The Mile.

Oldtimer’s Vision is one of the longer-shots in the race from post position two for Owner & Trainer Neil Knapp. The Kentucky Bred son of Pollard’s Vision has only had two starts this season in Portland but did manage a $15,000 claiming score at Emerald Downs last year. Jockey Luis Gonzalez will do the guiding.

Salty Minnow is Owned and Trained by Mike Thompson with jockey Kassie Guglielmino to handle the five year old son of Salt Lake in the two turn test after recently placing third in The Sprint Championship. Salty Minnow will break from post number eight in The Mile.

Finally there is Thunder, Owned by Michael Annechino and Trained by Jonathan Nance with Jockey Francisco Orduna-Rojas to pilot. The eight year old son of Bernstein has been a monster among claiming rivals at two turns throughout 2017 with wins at Turf Paradise, Arapaho Park and Portland Meadows. The late running gelding won six races in all last year as he looks to upset in The Mile from post seven. The Portland Mile is the eighth race on the program.

THE DONNA JENSEN MEMORIAL will feature Winninginfashion who attempts her seventh consecutive victory in the $15,000 added event at one mile. Owned by Rancho Viejo, Carmody & Baze and Trained by Rigoberto Velasquez, Jockey Jose Zunino will be atop the multiple stakes winning mare. She will not go unchallenged though as Furious Fire steps in against the older set after winning The Fall Challenge & the Oregon Hers. Four Times Lucky is a new arrival to Portland with claiming wins at Canterbury and Turf Paradise. The Donna Jensen is the seventh race on the card.

THE COLUMBIA RIVER is the sixth race of the day as Sophomore winner Take Charge Deputy will once again meet Grinning Tiger in the one mile test for three year olds. Though still a maiden, Charming Ruler should offer some California Class to the contest. The Columbia River is worth $15,000 added.

THE REVILLEW SLEW STARTER at one mile worth an est $10,000 will be the fifth race of the day as THE MIOLAND STARTER will also offer an est $10,000 for the mile test and will be run as the third race of the card. THE MOUNT HOOD HANDICAP for Quarter Horses will be the second race of the day with a purse of $11,000 added at 400 yards. Tickle Ur Fancy and Henry Craig head the list of talented sprinters in the early day dash. Tickle Ur Fancy looks to remain undefeated in the Sunday sprint after winning his last three starts.

Mile Day will also be a festive one with $1 Beer, $1 soft drinks, $1 programs, $2 Tacos and a free $10 play with new rewards member sign ups (details at the track). Parking and Admission are free and post time is 12 noon.
