$15,000 Bill Wineberg & $15,000 Janet Wineberg Stakes Headline Weekend of Racing

The $15,000 Bill Wineberg Stakes on Saturday and the $15,000 Janet Wineberg Stakes on Sunday will headline the weekend of racing at Portland Meadows. The Bill Wineberg Stakes for the two year old colts and geldings drew nine runners and will be the 8th race on Saturday, while the Janet Wineberg Stakes for the two year old fillies drew five runners and will be run as race 4 on Sunday. First post both days at Portland Meadows will be 1pm.

The Bill Wineberg Stakes is headlined by a couple of very impressive maiden breaking winners, Captainnotsosober and Van Glorious. Captainnotsosober won his career debut by over ten lengths against state-bred company back on September 28th under jockey Luis Torres who will be back onboard in the Bill Wineberg. Trainer Patti Harris who conditions Captainnotsosober has been enjoying a banner meet, with 9 wins from 25 starts, good for a 36% win percentage.

“He was training really well and showed talent right from the start,” said Harris. “You never know how their first out will go, but we were hopeful and very pleased with how he did.”

Patti’s husband John trained last year’s Bill Wineberg winner LG Jet.

“LG Jet is hoping to come back on Oregon Day,” said Harris. “They are two totally different horses, different personalities and different running styles. Captain shows a lot more speed but I think he can go on at longer distances.”

Trainer Ben Root will saddle Van Glorious as well as Chunkychipper and Jack the Pirate. Van Glorious went wire to wire in an open maiden special weight by three and a half lengths under jockey Debbie Hoonan in his career debut on September 30th.

“I liked Van a lot, and we thought when he beat Hollywood Deputy in his maiden event we knew he had done something good,” said trainer Ben Root. “His mom had earned over $200,000 in her career, so we had high expectations, and he’s young so he still could be anything. But Captainnotsosober was really impressive in his debut and I think anyone can see he’s certainly going to be tough to beat.”

Five of the nine runners are first time starters in the Bill Wineberg Stakes including a pair sent out by trainer Roger Stevenson, Two Socks and Beaver Believer. Summer Cowboy from the Bruno Maelfeyt barn, Cantchaco for Dave Duke, and Jack the Pirate are all making their debuts in the Bill Wineberg.

The Janet Wineberg drew five runners including maiden special weight winning runner Calypsonoted for owner/trainer Eric Jensen. Luis Torres and Calypsonoted were four lengths back at the eighth pole, but kicked it into gear late to get up and catch Mrs. Corcoran. To win the Janet Wineberg would be a very special thing for Jensen for more reasons than just collecting a stakes win as Janet Wineberg is his Grandmother.

“It sure would mean a lot to me to win this race and I think I have a great shot,” said Jensen. “I took her to the gate this morning and she was really well behaved, she’s feeling really really good.”

Duquesa and Troubadour Lass will both be making their career debuts in the Janet Wineberg. Shirazy and Zalajandra are also entered in the Janet Wineberg and both are coming out of fifth place finishes when they were beaten by twenty lengths.

First post both Saturday and Sunday is 1pm (Pacific).
