11 nomimated for the Opening Day, $10,000 Inaugural Handicap
Entries for the July 15th Opening Day Feature, the $10,000 Inaugural Handicap will be drawn on Monday July 9th, but nominations closed with 11 runners on Thursday July 5th. Last year’s Inaugural winner So Gone is back for owner/trainer Tawnja Elison. So Gone ran two brilliant races at Portland Meadows last season before heading to Fonner Park and most recently Les Bois. Trainer Debbie Fergason has nominated multiple stakes winner Midda’s Gold Touch to the Inaugural.Midda’s Gold Touch ended the season last year on a three race winning streak, including taking two straight handicap events. Shamundi is another former stakes winner who is nominated to the Inaugural. Shamundi was a top two year old at Portland Meadows in 2010 and has still been keeping good company, including a strong second place finish in a $12,500 Waiver Claiming event at Emerald Downs last month.
Both trainers Jim Fergason and Jonathan Nance have both nominated a pair of runners to the Inaugural. Fergason has nominated the speedster I’lbeamonkeysuncle as well as Northern California shipper Majestic Afleet for owner Art McFadden. Nance entered Outa Crown and Memo to Mya, who just took a $22,500 claiming event at Emerald Downs last week.
Asnaan for trainer Sam Dronen is nominated and as done some good work at Portland Meadows, hitting the board in 5 of 7 local starts. Chicks Dig Him is also nominated coming off a solid two and a quarter length score at Emerald Downs last time out. Dare Me Devil is another coming off a good win at Emerald. He just took a $5,000 Waiver Claiming event for trainer Jesse Velazquez on June 23rd. Revoluta is the final nominee, and has won 3 of 9 career starts here at Portland Meadows, including a 46 to 1 upset win last year.
The Inaugural Handicap will be run as the feature on Portland Meadows Opening Day which will run on Sunday July 15th. Entries will be drawn in the Portland Meadows Race Office on Monday July 9th.
