Musket Man third in the Preakness for Portland Native Vic Carlson

Musket Man once again made a solid run and looked to have a chance at victory for a brief moment as he ran a solid third in yesterday’s 134th running of the $1,000,000 Preakness Stakes at Pimlico. Musket Man was beaten less than two lengths by winner Rachael Alexandra and less than a length by Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird. Musket Man is owned in part by Portland resident Vic Carlson along with Eric Fein of New York.

Musket Man finished third in the Kentucky Derby just two weeks ago and has proven to be a very consistent runner.  Musket Man’s trainer Derek Ryan was pleased with his horses’ effort.

“I saw Rachael Alexandra breeze at Churchill before the Oaks and I knew she was a superstar,” said Ryan.  “My horse ran well, but got beat by a great one.  She’s a filly for the ages.”

Musket Man earned another $121,000 for his connections and has still maintained his record of never finishing off the board, with five wins and three thirds in eight career starts.

Before the Preakness, trainer Derek Ryan said Musket Man would most likely not race in the Belmont Stakes on June 6.
