Portland Meadows Kentucky Derby Party set for May 2nd
Be sure and join us on Saturday May 2nd as Portland Meadows will be celebrating the 135th running of the Kentucky Derby with a huge bash all day long! Doors open early at 6:30 am and the racing action starts from Churchill Downs with their first race at 7:30am.
The day’s activities continue at 10:00am with a Churchill Downs Handicapping Seminar with Portland Meadows Track Announcer Jason Beem. The class will last an hour and will feature in depth analysis about all the big races coming up later in the day at Churchill Downs, including the Kentucky Derby. The Turf Club Buffet will begin at 11am and go until 2pm. $25 gets you a sumptuous all you can eat buffet that will feature Prime Rib, Grilled Chicken, Shrimp, salads, fresh fruit and many other great choices. Fans in the Turf Club will receive a complimentary Derby Program with their buffet purchase and will be eligible for prize giveaways that are only awarded to Turf Club patrons. The Weiner Dog Spring Nationals will start a noon and will feature 4 trial races, with the top two finishers from each trial moving on to the finals to compete for a grand prize, as well as for the title of “Fastest Weiner in the West”. We are looking for 32 dogs, so sign up now! If you’d like to sign your Dachshund up for the races, email Jason.Beem@portlandmeadows.com .
Throughout the day there will be an Outdoor BBQ and Derby Tent with great specials. Fans will also be able to take their pictures with Thoroughbred racehorses in the paddock area from 11am to 2pm. There will be a Dixieland Jazz Band playing all long outside and a ladies hat contest that will be judged all throughout the days, so don’t forget to wear your big Derby Day hats to win great prizes!
