One Quick Brew up in time to win the 2008 Oregon Derby

One Quick Brew needed every inch of the one mile and one eighth run to get up in the final yards to win the 2008 Oregon Derby.  The 3 year-old son of Milwaukee Brew rallied down the outside to catch and pass Cool Kyle inside the sixteenth pole and win by a final margin of three quarters of a length.

The win made it two in a row for One Quick Brew, who races for owner Joe V. Kitchen and trainer Jim Ferguson.  Clark Jones was on board of the favored winner, who stayed toward the back for much of the early going, kicking out five wide on the second turn to make his run at the leaders.

Cool Kyle took command at the top of the stretch but was unable to hold off One Quick Brew.  It was nine lengths farther back to Brite Dictator who finished third.  The final time for the 55th running of the Oregon Derby was 1:56.09.

One Quick Brew has now won two out of six career starts, and the win in the Derby pushes his career earnings to $22,627.

Blue Sky Holiday dominant once again in the Oregon Oaks

Blue Sky Holiday continued her dominance around two turns as she made it four wins in a row with another powerful performance in today’s $20,000 Oregon Oaks.  Blue Sky Holiday led wire to wire, but was pushed for much of the race by the eventual third place finisher Why Tomorrow.

Going off as the prohibitive 1 to 2 favorite, Blue Sky Holiday disposed of her competition leaving the 5/16th pole, ending up winning by seven lengths.  She has now won four of twelve career starts, with earnings in excess of $39,000 for owner Dan Sutherland.

Javier Matias has been aboard the 3 year-old daughter of Belmont Stakes winner Victory Gallop for her last three wins.  Blue Sky Holiday races for trainer Tom Longstaff, who also won the weekend’s biggest race, the Portland Meadows Mile with Alabama Rain.

Final time for the one mile and one sixteenth was 1:47.75.
