Musket Man third in the Kentucky Derby for local owner

Musket Man has taken long time Portland based horse owner Vic Carlson on an amazing ride, and yesterday was no different as the three year old colt finished a solid third behind winner Mine That Bird and runner up Pioneerof The Nile in the world’s most prestigious race, the 135th running of the Kentucky Derby.  Carlson is a Portland resident and has owned and raced many horses at Portland Meadows and throughout the west coast.  He bought Musket Man as a pinhooking prospect for $15,000 but ended up keeping the horse as he showed promise.  Carlson owns the horse in partnership with New York based owner Eric Fein.

Musket Man had won the Grade 2 Illinois Derby and the Grade 3 Tampa Bay Derby on his way to Louisville yesterday and picked up $200,000 in earnings for his third place finish in yesterday’s Kentucky Derby.

Next stop for Musket Man is either the Preakness Stakes in May 16th or the Belmont Stakes on June 6th.  According to trainer Derek Ryan “If he runs in the Preakness he will not run in the Belmont, it will be one or the other.”
